Joyce states: 'I have known this air and heard it sung as long as I can remember. Of the Irish song I give one stanza which it is not necessary to translate; the whole song was a sort of lament (but not a death song), every stanza of which ended with the words "Och-ochone!"' (1909, p.11). |
