Joyce describes how this song began with the singer lamenting that his/her bag was stolen. A second singer would respond by asking 'What was in the bag' and the first singer would then detail the list of contents in the bag in an improvised manner. This is probably similar to the way in which twentieth-century pub ballads such as 'Bog Down in the Valley-O' function, where the contents of the bag change from singer to singer. |
